Please look below for answers to some of the more common questions about Lane Saddlery.
I will give you a time estimate when you place your order. If you have a show or event coming up, be sure to let me know and I might be able to finish in time. Orders are generally taking 4-6 weeks or less at this time.
Yes, Lane Saddlery tack is some of the best quality in custom model tack that you will find for sale. That's not to say I can guarantee your horse will win -- much more goes into judging an entry than simply the tack.
I sometimes have finished tack for sale on MHSP, under the username lanesaddlery.
I'd add those details if I were making a museum piece or they were specifically requested by a customer, but I believe that the vast majority of people would like a saddle set that will give them years of sturdy service rather than a minute detail that will never be seen in the showring.
I probably made it for myself then sold it later. I have always liked to focus on the details people can see. Making half panels or leaving the underside of the leather natural are some of the ways I've tried reducing bulk and saving steps. Not to mention, dyeing the underside of leather tends to dye your horse! See the question about storage.
I would suggest keeping it loosely wrapped in the bag it came in, then surrounded by bubble wrap without putting undue stress on any of the straps. You can also try placing saddles on a toilet paper roll and tying a strip of cloth around it. This will help it mold to a more horse-like shape. If you would like to display your tack semi-permanently, I suggest placing white felt between the leather and the horse to keep dye transfer to a minimum. I do NOT recommend displaying tack on a priceless or rare horse, since I cannot guarantee that minute amounts of dye will not transfer to the horse.
I'd love to! I've written a book that is intended to guide you though the process of making a huntseat saddle. You can find more information about it here. Other questions? Just ask.
Don't worry, just email me. I once made three saddles for a client before we got one just right for her horse. Not a problem!
I am committed to repairing any tack I've ever made, no matter if I am currently taking orders or not. Just email me and we'll get it sorted out. I am also happy to repair or adjust tack made by others, as long as you don't think it will tick them off! Again, shoot me an email.
If you can do without the extreme details, like stitchmarking, welting, tongue buckles, etc, then I can drop the price. If you'd like to be part of my pilot program to make a budget line of saddles, let me know and perhaps we can work something out.
Another way to save money is to get your bridle somewhere else. I have a dark secret -- I don't really enjoy making bridles. You might be able to find one to match somewhere else, or I can try dyeing your saddle to match a bridle you already have!
Finally, I sometimes have finished tack for sale on MHSP, often for less than custom prices.
